The Book

The Book Cover By Raven Lemay

Across from darkened hall, behind closed door,
a small lamp flickers faithfully.
I sit with feet upon the cold stone floor
Worn smooth by those who've journeyed before me.

The light of candle falls upon my pen
And illuminates the Word and Way for me.
The Shadows they rise up and fall again
But the colors they are bright enough to see.

The twisting Vine around the Word does grow
with gilt-gold leaves and fruits so ripe and rare
and becomes a candle - with red flame all aglow
and the flame becomes the Lion's golden hair.

I turn the page, and there before my eyes
The Word illumines brighter than before
The stars and universe enfold It round
as cherubim and seraphim adore.

With silver moon and stars around her feet
The Universe enfolds her with Its Grace.
For she bears the Cosmic Child of Light so sweet
The Undying Sun who holds the world in His embrace.

I wrap a woolen cloak around my frame
to ward off the chill and drafty winds of night
That shake and try to squelch the Candle flame
and make dark - the Word before my sight.

For I myself am drawn into the scene
In colors bright - alive and many hued.
I see in myself the Vine so evergreen
Myself with candle flame imbued.

I know not yet the Writing on this page
for the Author of it alone directs the pen
But when the time is ripe for the Word Unknown
I will pick up this book and write and read again.

The New Colossus By Emma Lazarus

The New Colossus By Emma Lazarus Cover Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame.
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The Speech Of The High One

The Speech Of The High One Cover I know I hung on that windswept tree,
Swung there for nine long nights,
Wounded by my own blade,
Bloodied for Odinn,
Myself and offering to myself:
Bound to the tree
That no man knows
Wither the roots of it run.

None gave me bread,
None gave me drink.
Down to the deepest depths I peered
Until I spied the Runes.
With a roaring cry I seized them up,
Then dizzy and fainting, I fell.

Well-being I won
And wisdom too.
I grew and took joy in my Growth:
From a word to a word
I was led to a word, From a deed to another deed.

Strange Changes

Strange Changes Cover I met you first on darkened moors,
one night beneath a cobalt moon
We walked the hills, climbed rugged tors
the wind sang sweet cold eerie tunes

Then you were quick to dance,
your lustrous hair a flowing breeze
When I chanced to glance at you
I saw your body rearrange
taking the shape of a yew tree
Strange change I thought...so strange...

The second time I saw you playing a sea nymph
on a black sand beach
We swam Together Through the surf,
I Touched the sea, but you I could not reach

Then you were quick to laugh,
your mirth a shiny aura
I paused to stare
while you shimmered in the air
taking a Griffin's form
Strange change I cried...too strange

The last time I saw you
acting like a wilderness child
Canadian tundra frozen and bleak,
animal magic free and wild

Presenting your true self
while the wolves remained silent
The Moon howled in delight
as you kissed me softly in the arctic night
and left me standing on a melting world
full of strange changes...very strange...

Forest

Forest Cover Deep in the dark, silent forest
The Lord and the Lady and me
Walk in reverent wonder
At the mystery of beauty we see.
Misty clouds and moonbeams
Play a silent symphony,
Filled with awe and peace
they They should walk with me.

Deep in the dark, silent forest
Where first they came to me,
The Lord of the Woods, the
Green Man,
And the Lady in majesty.
There 'neath the moon I adore them
With the beauty of nature around.
The Athame in blue-white splendor,
then draws the circle round.

Deep in the dark, silent forest
The Lord and the Lady and me
Create a space of wonder
Just large enough for three.
Earth and Air, Fire and Water
Thrice the circle drawn
Enchanted space of ritual
until the morning dawn.

Deep in the dark, silent forest
The Lord and the Lady and me.
At the end of a long nights ritual
Are content and happy we three.
We watch the glow of the embers
As the heat of the fire dies low.
A few moments of Meditation
And then its time to go.

Deep in the dark, silent forest
Here by the wide open sea
The Lord and the Lady go Walking
The Lord and the Lady and me.
Here in the dark, silent forest
I've learned a great mystery,
They are each a part of the other,
And each a great part of me.

The Cloud Sculptors

The Cloud Sculptors Cover by Staeorra Rokraven

The air finds flight in forms of lofty wind
As one with nature's Children taking part
And soaring up to go and find a friend
Then join with water spinning wispy art.

This nature's Process has eternal known
The way to hang up on the sky these drapes
But wonder not how these soft clouds have grown
From fleecy strand filled webs to take their shapes?

Perhaps the artist's brush a thing unseen
With Living tools the Elder Gods express
Those firey ones whose scales and talons gleam
To grace the heavens with their soft caress.

Now see the strokes of carving wings along
With falling rain - the strains of Dragon song.

Ariadia Or A Gospel Of The Witches

Ariadia Or A Gospel Of The Witches Cover

Book: Ariadia Or A Gospel Of The Witches by Charles Godfrey Leland

Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches is an 1899 book by Charles Godfrey Leland. The book is an attempt to portray the beliefs and rituals of an underground religious witchcraft tradition in Tuscany that, Leland claimed, had survived for centuries until his discovery of its existence in the 1890s. Scholars have disputed the veracity of this claim. Still, the book has become one of the foundational texts of the Neopagan witchcraft movements Wicca and Stregheria.

The text is a composite. Some of it is Leland's translation into English of an original Italian manuscript, the Vangelo (gospel). Leland reported receiving the manuscript from his primary informant on Italian witchcraft beliefs, a woman Leland referred to as "Maddalena" and whom he called his "witch informant" in Italy. The rest of the material comes from Leland's research on Italian folklore and traditions, including other related material from Maddalena. Leland had been informed of the Vangelo's existence in 1886, but it took Maddalena eleven years to provide him with a copy. After translating and editing the material, it took another two years for the book to be published. Its fifteen chapters portray the origins, beliefs, rituals and spells of an Italian pagan witchcraft tradition. The central figure of that religion is the goddess Aradia, who came to Earth to teach the practice of witchcraft to peasants in order for them to oppose their feudal oppressors and the Catholic Church.

Leland's work remained obscure until the 1950s, when other theories about, and claims of, "pagan witchcraft" survivals began to be widely discussed. Aradia began to be examined within the wider context of such claims. Scholars are divided, with some dismissing Leland's assertion regarding the origins of the manuscript, and others arguing for its authenticity as a unique documentation of folk beliefs. Along with increased scholarly attention, Aradia came to play a special role in the history of Gardnerian Wicca and its offshoots, being used as evidence that pagan witchcraft survivals existed in Europe, and because a passage from the book's first chapter was used as a part of the religion's liturgy. After the increase in interest in the text, it became widely available through numerous reprints from a variety of publishers, including a 1999 critical edition with a new translation by Mario and Dina Pazzaglini.

Introduction To The Elder Edda

Introduction To The Elder Edda Cover

Book: Introduction To The Elder Edda by John Ronald Tolkien

The Elder Edda is not a single continuous narrative, but a collection of poems, most of which are preserved in the Konungsbok, or Codex Regius (King's Book), copied in Iceland about A.D. 1270. The poems are the work of many poets. Their language suggests that they were composed between 800 and 1100 A.D. and first written down between 1150 and 1250 A.D. The poems are a rich source of Information for culture and belief among the Vikings. They are not, however, purely Scandinavian. Christian Irish influence is likely, while the Sigurd story draws on actual events among the tribes that invaded the Roman Empire between 350-600 A.D.

The Elder Edda first came to scholarly attention in the seventeenth century as antiquarian interest in the non-classical past was growing in Europe. It was published in its entirety just as intense romantic and nationalistic interest in the perceived tribal ancestors of the European nation states emerged towards the end of the eighteenth century. This interest, combined with the new science of philology, ensured popular and scholarly interest in texts like the Elder Edda. Some of the lays were available in bowdlerized versions even for children by the later nineteenth century. In the hands of Richard Wagner, the Elder Edda became the foundation of one of the century's masterpieces. While northern legends and the Scholarship based on it were misused by the Nazis to develop and further their ideas of race, they are seriously misrepresented by such ideas. In the 1960s, the poet W. H. Auden in collaboration with an Old Norse scholar, Paul B. Taylor, produced a Translation of sixteen of the poems.

Earth Birth

Earth Birth Cover By: Holly Solt

In a time Before the mortal
when magic came to birth
evil and good in conflict
with the Powers of the earth

Long ago, and far away
a time we don't remember
for we had yet to come to earth
for earth was still an ember...

Mountains black and oceans grey
the sky was black and foul
and air was only fog and mist
and torrid winds would howl

Then from the sky a soft wind blew
and dots of light appeared
and rain fell down upon the earth
that was so scorched and seared

Evil fought with good
and the earth shook with fear
canyons and the continents
from earthquakes did appear

Then dragons flew as birds
and beasts were treetop tall
and love was soon to be
the magic of it all

Old evil hid beneath the earth
and made the center burn
and waited for the time and place
that it could have it's turn

And love produced the day
and light shone all Around
and Love proclaimed it's victory
by giving life a sound

Now mortals walk upon the earth
and think to be so grand
to rule the very planet
the ground on which they stand

Mortal minds cannot accept
the battle carries on
good and evil will exist
long after earth is gone.

Witchs Dance

Witchs Dance Cover Nude bodies
Dancing in perfect time
To the beat of the earth,
And the music of nature.
The fire shines brightly,
Ecasin gthe witchs' dance
In a god(dess) like essence.
The silent whisper of approval
Rings loudly in the ears of the deaf.
To them, this is the life
Of peace and tranquility;
But to the righteous,
It is sin,
Carried on a silver platter,
To mock the Younger god
Of the Western world;
The one who sent the peaceful ones
Into a world of seclusion.
Locked into silence.
To speak out is death.
The righteous
Would have a magnificent feast
Of witchs' meat at the slightest
Peep of the hidden Children

The Equinox

The Equinox Cover

Book: The Equinox by Aleister Crowley

The Equinox (subtitle: The Review of Scientific Illuminism) is a series of publications in book form that serves as the official organ of the A.·.A.·., the mystical order of aleister crowley (although material is often of import to its sister organization, Ordo Templi Orientis). Begun in 1909, it remains one of the definitive works on occultism and magick, while several issues also contain poetry, fiction, plays, artwork, and biographies. The last issue was published in 1998, although two new editions are currently being prepared for publication.

WITH the publication of this REVIEW begins a completely new adventure in the history of mankind. Whatever knowledge may previously have been imputed to men, it has always been fenced in with conditions and restrictions. The time has come to speak plainly, and so far as may be in the language of the multitude.

Thus, the Brothers of the A. A. announce themselves without miracle or mystery. It is easy for every charlatan to perform wonders, to bewilder and even to deceive not only fools but all persons, however shrewd, untrained in observation; nor does the trained observed always succeed instantly in detecting the fraud. Again, what the A. A. propose to do is to enable such men as are capable of advancement to a higher Interpretation of manhood to do so; and the proof of their ability lies in their success, and not in any other irrelevant phenomenon. The argument from miracles is a non sequitur.

Nor is there anything mysterious in the A. A.; one must not confuse the mysterious with the unknown. Some of the contents of this REVIEW may be difficult or impossible to understand at first, but only in the sense that Homer is unintelligible to a person ignorant of Greek.

The Firing Line

The Firing Line Cover There's a firing line that crosses our heart
So, How close to this line do we need to get
Before it's crossed over and we begin to sweat
Please, Just tell me my spot on the wall
Where should I stand / How should I fall
If I'm up there, Who's got the gun
When do they load
Take aim & let go.
It's really not fair Someone's standing in my spot
That great Little spot that I Thought just for me
Why won't he listen so I can be FREE
It's a simple request that he needs to hear
"Move over now buddy" My time is real near
You see I want to go for my Line Has Been Crossed
The older you get the thicker your lines
Yet, The Love you can feel is much more intense
Everyone should take chances with their own Firing Line
It's a part of your body a part of your mind
Don't worry now for your spot will be there
The question for you is, "When To Prepare."

The Star In The West A Critical Essay On The Works Of Aleister Crowley Cover

Book: The Star In The West A Critical Essay On The Works Of Aleister Crowley by John Frederick Charles Fuller

The Star in the West: a Critical Essay upon the Works of aleister crowley by Captain (as he then was) J. F. C. Fuller can now be read online. This is a lengthy study of Crowley's early poetry and philosophy (as expressed in the writings collected in his 1905-7 Collected Works). Some might question the "critical" part; even AC was occasionally embarassed by the excesses of Fuller's praise, as witnessed by his ca. 1910 poem "The Convert (a hundred years hence)"

New Words And Old

New Words And Old Cover In the autumn of the lightnings, in the mighty-voiced throng In the Twilight were the offerings, with both chants and full-throat song:

These the People, born to silence
These the Seekers, born to sight
These the Wanderers, born to roaming
These frail Humans, born to night...

In the winter's swirling blizzard, in the quaking of great trees In the night-black child of charring, in the wavering, fitful breeze:

These the Wicca, seeking Knowledge
These the Shamen, knowing care
These the Students, always reading
These the Hopeful, who despair...

In the spring-tide's joyous growing, in the flower and the leaf In the summer's dearth and plenty, saving up to stoke Belief:

Hear the Mother, gentle-voicings
Hear the Father, rumbled whisper
Hear the Children, gay and laughing
Hear the Many -- sing your vesper...
Now the Bard and Druid gather
Now the Priestess calls afar
Now the Time to Watch and Listen
Now the Time to Practice more!

The River

The River Cover In the midst of death and violence
A light kindling in my heart
Is Beginning to warm my soul
With new life.

I look back at the white water boiling behind me
With a shuddering anger at the treacherous, roiling white light.
I look ahead at the broad, black expanse
Smooth, yet turbulent and rich with wonderful power.

Deep moments of peace are the essence of what is Coming
Deep pools of bliss are the essence of what is coming
Troubles are the food that nourishes a peaceful life
Troubles gently feed bliss with subtle flavours of delight

I bow to all the Deities who are Bringing me wealth unmeasured
