The Valkyries

The Valkyries Image
THE "VALKYRIES "("CHOOSERS OF THE SLAIN") ARE A GROUP OF BEAUTIFUL,YOUNG FIERCE BATTLE-ORIENTED GODDESSES WHO MOUNTED UPON WINGED HORSES ANd ARMED WITH HELMETS AND SPEARS. THEY ARE NORMAL VIEWED AS THE MAIDENS OF "ODIN". THE "VALKYRIES" SCOUT THE BATTLEFIELDS TO CHOOSE THE BRAVEST OF THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN SLAIN AND ESCORT THESE HEROES TO "VALHALLA", "ODIN'S HALL" WHERE THEY SERVE FOOD AND DRINK TO BOTH THE GOD AND HIS GUESTS....THOSE BRAVE WARRIORS KILLED IN BATTLE......AND WHEN THEY AREN'T WAITING ON THESE BLESSED MEN, THEY CAN FOUND OVERSEEING ALL BATTLES THAT ARE WAGING ON THE WORLD. THEY NOT ONLY VISIT EVERY BATTLE, BUT THEY CHOOSE WHO WILL WIN THE CONFLICT AND WHO WILL PERISH. THEIR PURPOSE IS TO BRING ABOUT THE DEATH OF ANY WARRIOR CHOSEN BY "ODIN" TO BECOME A NEW MEMBER IN HIS FORCE. WHEN A "VALKYRIE" CHOOSES A FAVORITE MORTAL, SHE WILL TEACH THIS PERSON SPECIAL SKILLS OF MAGIC AND PROTECT HER CHOSEN BY WARNING OF UPCOMING DANGER AND CONFLICT. SHE WILL REMAIN THIS PERSON'S GUARDIAN SPIRIT THROUGHOUT HIS OR HER LIFETIME.THE "VALKYRIE" HAS THE GIFT OF PROPHECY, AND WILL SOMETIMES EVEN TAKE THE FORM OF A MORTAL WOMAN IN ORDER TO MARRY THE HERO OF HER HEART.

THE "VALKYRIES" ARE ALSO "ODIN'S "MESSENGERS, AND WHEN THEY RIDE FORTH ON THEIR ERRANDS, THEIR ARMOR CAUSES A STRANGE FLICKERING LIGHT. WE CALL IT THE "AURORA BOREALIS OR "NORTHERN LIGHTS". THE VALKYRIE IS RELATED TO THE CELTIC WARRIOR-GODDESS, THE "MORRIGAN," WHO LIKEWISE MAY ASSUME THE FORM OF THE RAVEN.

SONG OF DARRAOAR

fROM THE ICELANDIC "NJAL'S SAGA". A MAN CALLED "DARRAOAR" HAS A VISION THAT TWELVE "VALKYRIES" ARE WEAVING THE FATE OF AN ON-GOING BATTLE ON A GRISLY LOOM...

"BLOOD RAINS FROM THE CLOUDY WEB"

" ON THE BROAD LOOM OF SLAUGHTER."

" THE WEB OF MAN GREY AS ARMOR"

" IS NOW BEING WOVEN; THE VALKYRIES"

" WILL CROSS IT WITH A CRIMSON WEFT."

" THE WARP IS MADE OF HUMAN ENTRAILS; "

" HUMAN HEADS ARE USED AS HEDDLE-WEIGHTS;"

" THE HEDDLE RODS ARE BLOOD-WET SPEARS;"

" THE SHAFTS ARE IRON-BOUND AND ARROWS ARE THE SHUTTLES."

" WITH SWORDS WE WILL WEAVE THIS WEB OF BATTLE."

" THE VALKYRIES GO WEAVING WITH DRAWN SWORDS, "

" HILDR AND HJ"oRthRIMUL, SANGR'idR AND SVIPUL."

" SPEARS WILL SHATTER SHIELDS WILL SPLINTER,"

" SWORDS WILL GNAW LIKE WOLVES THROUGH ARMOR."

" LET US NOW WIND THE WEB OF WAR "

" WHICH THE YOUNG KING ONCE WAGED."

" LET US ADVANCE AND WADE THROUGH THE RANKS,"

" WHERE FRIENDS OF OURS ARE EXCHANGING BLOWS."

" LET US NOW WIND THE WEB OF WAR "

" AND THEN FOLLOW THE KING TO BATTLE"

" GUNNR AND G"oNDUL CAN SEE THERE"

" THE BLOOD-SPATTERED SHIELDS THAT GUARDED THE KING."

" LET US NOW WIND THE WEB OF WAR "

" WHERE THE SACRED BANNER IS FORGING FORWARD"

" LET HIS LIFE NOT BE TAKEN;"

" ONLY THE VALKYRIES CAN CHOOSE THE SLAIN."

" LANDS WILL BE RULED BY NEW PEOPLES "

" WHO ONCE INHABITED OUTLYING HEADLANDS."

" WE PRONOUNCE A GREAT KING DESTINED TO DIE;"

" NOW AN EARL IS FELLED BY SPEARS."

" THE MEN OF IRELAND WILL SUFFER A GRIEF "

" THAT WILL NEVER GROW OLD IN THE MINDS OF MEN."

" THE WEB IS NOW WOVEN AND THE BATTLEFIELD REDDENED;"

" THE NEWS OF DISASTER WILL SPREAD THROUGH LANDS."

" IT IS HORRIBLE NOW TO LOOK AROUND "

" AS A BLOOD-RED CLOUD DARKENS THE SKY."

" THE HEAVENS ARE STAINED WITH THE BLOOD OF MEN,"

" AS THE VALKYRIES SING THEIR SONG."

" WE SANG WELL VICTORY SONGS "

" FOR THE YOUNG KING; HAIL TO OUR SINGING!"

" LET HIM WHO LISTENS TO OUR VALKYRIE SONG"

" LEARN IT WELL AND TELL IT TO OTHERS."

" LET US RIDE OUR HORSES HARD ON BARE BACKS, "

" WITH SWORDS UNSHEATHED AWAY FROM HERE!"

"And then they tore the woven cloth from the loom and ripped it to pieces, each keeping the shred she held in her hands... The women mounted their horses and rode away, six to the south and six to the north."

On Children By Kahlil Gibran

On Children By Kahlil Gibran Cover
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let our bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Myths And Myth Makers Old Tales And Superstitions

Myths And Myth Makers Old Tales And Superstitions Cover

Book: Myths And Myth Makers Old Tales And Superstitions by John Fiske

IN publishing this somewhat rambling and unsystematic series of papers, in which I have endeavoured to touch briefly upon a great many of the most important points in the study of mythology, I think it right to observe that, in order to avoid confusing the reader with intricate discussions, I have sometimes cut the matter short, expressing myself with dogmatic definiteness where a sceptical vagueness might perhaps have seemed more becoming. In treating of popular
legends and Superstitions, the paths of inquiry are circuitous enough, and seldom can we reach a satisfactory conclusion until we have travelled all the way around Robin Hood's barn and back again. I am sure that the reader would not have thanked me for obstructing these crooked lanes with the thorns and brambles of philological and antiquarian discussion, to such an extent as perhaps to make him despair of ever reaching the high road.

I have not attempted to review, otherwise than incidentally, the works of Grimm, Muller, Kuhn, Breal, Dasent, and Tylor; nor can I pretend to have added anything of consequence, save now and then some bit of explanatory comment, to the results obtained by the labour of these scholars; but it has rather been my aim to present these results in such a way as to awaken general interest in them. And accordingly, in dealing with a subject which depends upon philology almost as much as astronomy depends upon mathematics, I have omitted philological considerations wherever it has been possible to do so. Nevertheless, I believe that nothing has been advanced as established which is not now generally admitted by scholars, and that nothing has been advanced as probable for which due evidence cannot be produced. Yet among many points which are proved, and many others which are probable, there must always remain many other facts of which we cannot feel sure that our own Explanation is the true one; and the student who endeavours to fathom the primitive thoughts of mankind, as enshrined in mythology, will do well to bear in mind the modest words of Jacob Grimm, - himself the greatest scholar and thinker who has ever dealt with this class of subjects,--"I shall indeed interpret all that I can, but I cannot interpret all that I should like." PETERSHAM, September 6, 1872.

A Poem For The New Moon

A Poem For The New Moon Cover
The Goddess,
from the great above,
She set Her mind towards the great below,
Inanna,
from the great above,
She set Her mind toward the great below.
My Lady abandoned heaven,
abandoned Earth,
to the nether world She descended,
Inanna abandoned heaven,
abandoned Earth,
to the nether world She descended.

Charge Of The Sun God

Charge Of The Sun God Cover
I am He who rides the dawn wave
to break on the Western Shore.

I am the Spear, the flight of birds
I am the Sword, the scent of battle
I am the Shield, guardian of fertile earth.

My blood is the golden tide that awakens the Land
My heart the red rending of sacrifice to come.

I give green gift to the leaves of the trees
Yet shroud my face lest they fall too soon,
For Might and Mercy are within me
And Honour is my domain

I am the budding horns of kid and kine
I run with hooves of burnished bronze
Across fields that ripen at my touch

I am Lord of Forest and Field
My chariot, the endless sky
I am the core of men and the sum of all
And I stand in the rays of the Sun.
